Create your own Stories and Poems

Create your own story and/or poem or if you like just create a piece of writing inspired by the following pictures.  The pictures have been taken outside and there are many of them to help inspire you to start writing.  Maybe you could bring a tree to life using 'personification' giving it a human characteristic.  An example of this would be using the phrase 'The tree stretched out its arms and crawled towards me' in response to the following picture.

Picture-383.jpg

The tree obviously does not have arms and cannot crawl, but by giving it a human characteristic such as this it is known as 'personification'

See if you can see the two faces in the following
picture; one is of a smiley face and the other is of Santa Claus.

Picture-450.jpg

Look carefully at the trunk of the tree and see if you can make out the faces on the bark.  These faces are natural and have not been carved into the trunk.  You will have to look carefully as Santa is quite hard to find!

  • When you are looking at this picture how do you think the tree or the faces within the tree are feeling?
  • What emotions do you think it has?  Do you know any other emotions?
  • Why do you think it is feeling like this?
  • Have you ever felt this way?  When?
  • What happened to make you feel like this?

You could start a story for this picture or other pictures with 'This tree feels......., because........  So now, it will............

Be as creative as you like

Have a look at the following words and use them for inspiration to help you create your stories and poems.  Feel free to include them in your work or use a dictionary to come up with new words inspired by the pictures.

Here is a poem about a squirrel for you to read and help inspire you to write about the pictures you have seen.  It is called 'Hurly Comes A'Calling' and is written by Sandy Bazinet.

Hurly Burly, the squirrel next door,
Came over to visit one day.
He sat on a pipe, gave his fur a quick swipe,
And invited himself in to play.

I should have said no!
I should have thought to be wary!
But smarts never entered the picture!
I let down my guard,
My door I unbarred,
And Hurly leaped fast off of the fixture!

He ran past my toes,
His tail dusted my nose
As I leaned down to watch him come in.
And since then I've had him,
A visiting add-in,
He thinks he's one of my kin!

But squirrels are not easy,
Their manners un-pleasey,
They certainly raise quite a fuss.
I never expected such chaos, such havoc,
But Hurly has made quite a muss!

My rugs are all shredded,
My mattress debedded,
Old grandfather clock is his nest!
But that's not the worst
With a house that is cursed
With a squirrel that involved in a quest!

He chatters and scratches.
He picks at the latches
Of cupboards that hold all my food!
And if they resist,
His teeth they persist,
And sly is his favorite mood.

So I need a vacation,
Some sleep, a relation
Who doesn't put holes in the wall.
I need someone who's sneaky
Who'll throw out old squeaky.
Is there someone out there I can call?

Someone to beguile him,
To charm him, to file him
With news of eviction today,
Someone who'll relieve me,
Who'll sooth me, who'll free me,
Believe me when I say that I'll pay!

In the meantime it's flea time,
Burly's afternoon tea time,
When I scratch with the rest of the furries,
And wait for that stranger
Who'll play the Lone Ranger
And vanquish my woes and my worries!

"Bye, bye Mr. Squirrel!
Don't come back now!
You rascal you!"

Now you have looked at the pictures we hope that you feel inspired to write your story or poem.  Once you have done so please submit it to us below.  We really look forward to seeing what you have come up with.  Good Luck!
