Reading Agents

The Reading Agents project has been running since November ’09. Rotherham Libraries have worked in partnership with NWEAZ to deliver the project in 8 different schools. 10 pupils in each school have been chosen to take part and they have been working as Reading Agents to make their school library an attractive and exciting place for all pupils and teachers to use. The have had to choose new books and furniture for their library, recommended books for each other to read and talked about buying and borrowing books. The project ends on the 11th February with a special graduation event for all of the Reading Agents at Ferham Primary School. Chris Mould, the author of the Something Wickedly Weird series will be there to help present the Agents with a medal. Each school will also do a short presentation on a different aspect of the Reading Agents project.

We wanted to let everyone know about one pupil from High Greave Junior School who has really taken on his role as a Reading Agent…………………Liam Herbert.

Liam decided to write a play script about buying and borrowing books for him and the other High Greave Reading Agents to present to the other schools at the graduation event. He did this in his own time and has made sure that everyone has a part to play. The 5 minute play follows three people who are confused about whether it is better to buy books or borrow them from the library. They decide to visit a book shop and a library to try and find out…..

Confused person 2: “Why do you think it’s good to buy books?”
Bookshop owner 1: “Well you don’t have to pay for any damage.”
Bookshop owner 2: “And you can pass it down your family.”

Confused person 1: “Could you tell us about borrowing books?”
Library assistant 1: Certainly, if you borrow books if you don’t like it you can bring it back.”

Angela Wright from Mowbray Gardens Library has been working with the Reading Agents from High Greave and is really pleased with the effort Liam has put into the group along with the other pupils.
