Roscars

The 8th July 2010 saw the climax of Rotherham’s first Children and Young People’s 3 week festival at the Magna Centre with the Roscars event. With the main hall set out ‘Oscars style’ and a red carpet prepared, Rotherham was ready to award and showcase excellent practice from its schools. Throughout the year pupils from schools had been creating films and animations of no more than 3 minutes using any type of digital video and editing software which was judged on creativity and originality.

The content of all entries were linked to a theme within the curriculum with ideas being drawn from Class work, a Rotherham Ready or other enterprise activity, course, portfolio or project work produced for awards (e.g. Dida, Imedia, NCFE, OCR National, BTEC, AS/A2 etc) work experience and placements, School or college trips/events or may have been specially developed for the ROSCARS.

The films and animations were entered into different categories including animation-digital, animation-stop motion, film-fact, film-fiction, best use of techniques, music and special effects, a newcomer award and teacher award. A huge range of entries were received giving the judging panel one of its hardest years for short listing the event. After hours of watching and discussing the films the panel came up with the shortlist which made it to the Roscars at Magna hosted by Dave Benson Phillips. The energetic host provided great entertainment throughout the evening presenting each award with great character and humour as well as posing for pictures with the winners. The audience were also treated to performances from winners of the R Factor including a dance group, a swing band and a musical performance.

It was a special night for all involved and was a fantastic advertisement for Rotherham Schools and the talent of its young people. The event will take place again next year with the aim of being bigger and better and building on the success of this year. All schools were thanked for taking part with some of the films being especially brilliant.
