Crowden Residential

Nine Families from Aughton Early Years Centre spent a week in February testing their teamwork, communication and motivational skills through a number of exciting and challenging outdoor activities.

The activities took place over 3 days at Crowden Outdoor Education Centre in Longdendale Valley. The busy schedule included walking, orienteering, archery and zip wiring. The families also had an activity session based around the book ‘Where the wild things are’.

The variety of activities gave families the chance to work together and to have fun. During the orienteering the families were spilt into teams and were given a map to help them to find different points around the grounds. The points each had a letter on them which the teams then took pack to the leaders at the centre. The teams had to effectively work together in order to be successful in the task and bring back as many letters as possible.

Each family on the residential had their own room and children were provided with a resource pack including books, a blanket, crayons and cuddly toy to take home afterwards. Inspire Rotherham also provided an activity pack for each child which included pens, pencils, notepads and a bookmark.

The children also had digital cameras to capture the group doing the activities; the pictures will be used to make a memory scrapbook of the trip on their return.

On the last day of the residential the children were awarded with certificates congratulating them for successfully taking part in the activities. The children were asked about their favourite experiences from their time at Crowden to which on little girl replied; “I’ve just loved being here”.
